About the Museums in this package:
- The Owens-Thomas House is a stylish residence that offers a stunning example of wealth in the 1800s. The house was designed by William Jay and built for a cotton merchant, Richard Richardson and his wife, Frances Bolton. The Richardsons were subjected to the misfortune of losing their home to the depression of 1820, and for the next ten years, it became an elegant boarding house. In 1825 the Revolutionary War hero the Marquis de Lafayette paid a visit to the home and from the ornate cast-iron balcony on the home’s south side, delivered his two Savannah addresses to thousands of citizens.
- Telfair Museum The Telfair Academy of Arts & Sciences is the oldest art museum in the South. Built for Alexander Telfair, son of Georgia Governor Edward Telfair, in 1820, the home was left to his two sisters who had lived with him. In accordance with the will of Mary Telfair in 1875, the building was opened as as the Telfair Museum of Art in 1886 after her death. It has remained a museum, and its rooms, furnished with many items and artworks owned by the Telfair family, have been restored to their original appearance. Stand together in the rotunda and image attending the grand-opening gala in 1883 with dignitaries such as Jefferson, the former president of the Confederacy.
- The Jepson Center for the Arts Covered with glistening white Portuguese stone and consisting of two separate structures connected by glass bridges over a protected lane that is part of Savannah’s town plan originally conceived in 1733 by Georgia’s founder General James Oglethorpe, the building has a soaring, light-filled atrium and sweeping, three-level staircase that provides access to its expansive galleries. The Jepson Center for the Arts has a total of 14,000 square feet of additional exhibition and studio space that permit the Telfair to mount temporary exhibitions that are considerably larger than has been possible in the landmark Telfair Academy. Education is a vital element of the Jepson Center for the Arts. In addition to expanded studio space, a teacher and docent resource center, a community gallery, and the auditorium, the Jepson Center features a unique, two-level hands-on gallery especially for children and their families entitled ArtZeum.
