Planning Your Trip to Savannah

When planning your trip to Savannah, the Gastonian offers personalized concierge service 24 hours a day. We are always happy to provide you with information on some of our favorite restaurants, tours, shopping, and sightseeing.

Savannah is part of Georgia and South Carolina's coastal region, and is commonly referred to as part of the "Lowcountry". The Lowcountry begins in the northern Sea Islands of South Carolina, and works its way down the Coast, until it reaches Savannah and the outlying islands that were historically fishing and rice-growing communities. The culture of the Lowcountry are distinct to this region, as are our the foods, which are heavily influenced by English, French and African styles and ingredients. As this region was a thriving port in the Nineteenth Century, you will find a diverse mixture of cultures and influences in this coastal region.

Lowcountry Cuisine typically includes seafood, and home-grown fruits and vegetables. Staples such as pulled pork barbeque, She-crab stew, shrimp & grits and Savannah red rice are local favorites. Some of the best examples of Lowcountry dining can be found right here in Savannah, and here are just a few of our favorites that are sure to please:

  • If you are looking for the best fried chicken in town, please make sure you visit Mrs. Wilkes’ Boarding House. Just remember that she is only open for lunch Monday through Friday.
  • If a casual, laid-back atmosphere is what you are looking for check out The Crystal Beer Parlor, but make sure you save room for their amazing peach cobbler.
  • Last but not least, for those that are looking for a romantic, southern flare ask us about a reservation at the Olde Pink House, a true Savannah tradition.

Tours are a great way of get a more in-depth understanding of what makes Savannah so great. We recommend taking a tour whether it is your first time to Savannah or your tenth. Trolley tours are a great way to get around town with additional information on the history of the area as you go. They provide a 90 minute tour with the option of getting On/Off throughout your journey.

There are many other types of tours available in Savannah’s Historic District. Walking tours, ghost tours, Pub Crawls, and even open water tours ensure that you can pursue your interests and see Savannah up-close.  Of course, if you want to see Savannah as it would have been at its peak, a Carriage tour cannot be beat!
