SEE & DO

EXPLORE SAVANNAH

Located on Gaston St, the border between the South Historic and East Victorian districts, there's a wealth of things to do immediately surrounding The Gastonian. Explore the art, history, and dining scene in town, or escape into the seclusion of nature.

Not sure where to begin? Whether you prefer strolling the squares or enjoying an afternoon at Tybee, our nearby beach, the Concierge at The Gastonian can help you make the most of your visit. Below are a few of our favorite recommendations – and if you have questions, please ask, as we're here to help make the most of your time in Savannah!

START WITH FORSYTH PARK

The Gastonian is just two gorgeous blocks away from Forsyth Park. Beloved by both locals and visitors alike, this 30-acre park is home to the city's most famous fountain. Blend in with locals walking their dogs and joggers out for exercise, or catch musicians and artists creating their works outdoors. If you are looking for something to do when visiting Savannah, you could spend your whole day at Forsyth Park.

STROLL THE SQUARES

We highly recommend meandering the ten-block stretch of Bull Street, starting from the edge of Forsyth Park on Gaston Street and ending at Johnson Square. It's about a 20-minute stroll through the beautiful squares with plenty of shopping, dining, and drinking opportunities along the way. From there, walk westward to see the Johnny Mercer monument in Ellis Square before unique gifts in the shops, courtyard and artist studios of the Savannah City Market.

DINE, SHOP, & DRINK ON RIVER STREET

Bull Street ends at City Hall, where you'll be just steps away from River Street. Originally the city's center of commerce in the late 1800s, today you'll find countless shops, award-winning restaurants, and lively bars on the popular mile-long stretch along the Savannah River. It's one of the must-see Savannah places to visit, best known for hosting one of largest St Patrick's Day celebrations in the US – second only to New York City!

If you find Savannah's haunted reputation thrilling, definitely take the time to explore the city's cemeteries and haunts. Savannah's long history naturally lends itself to the possibilities of haunted mansions, streets, and homes. WANDER OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Even before James Edward Oglethorpe founded the town of Savannah in 1733, he envisioned a walkable city laid out in a grid of residential and commercial blocks arranged around a central square – in what would come to be known as The Oglethorpe Plan. The Gastonian is within easy walking distance to a number of city squares: Whitefield, Calhoun, Monterey, Troup, Lafayette, and Madison. It's a five-minute walk down Lincoln Street to Colonial Park Cemetery, and from there, just a few blocks to the Juliet Gordon Low Birthplace on Oglethorpe Avenue.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We acknowledge The Gastonian was built upon Muscogee Creek ancestral land. As settlers on their indigenous homeland, we have a duty to recognize the Muscogee Creek nation as the original stewards of Savannah and beyond. The Muscogee Nation is one of the 5 Civilized Tribes and is the fourth largest tribe in the US. Before 1500 AD, the Muscogee covered the entire southeastern US.

Here in downtown Savannah, the Yamacraw were a small group of Creek Indians living on the Savannah River. When Oglethorpe landed here in 1733, he worked with the Yamacraw (Chief Tomochichi) to peacefully settle on the bluff where Bay Street is today.

It is our hope that this land acknowledgment will help empower First Nation voices and inspire others in the community to pursue a stronger, more inclusive, and equitable future for our country. We seek to educate ourselves while contributing to the Muscogee Creek peoples by raising awareness and learning how to be a better ally against continued colonization.
